Another victory for TALC! Sheriff selection process

Another victory for TALC!
Lane County consented to open recruitment for our next sheriff!
✊We did it again! As a result of our public comment, emails, and organizing efforts, the Lane County Board of Commissioners announced on 5/13/2025 it would launch an open recruitment call to replace our recently retired sheriff. The Board then conducted public interviews with all finalists.

This is another win for the Trans Alliance of Lane County and our supporters, who engaged in grassroots community activism since the presidential election to protect the rights of all county residents.

This is also a big win for the people of Lane County, who expect transparency in our government. We needed to know how this major law enforcement position stands on key issues such as following the Oregon Sanctuary Promise Act, upholding the rights of transgender and immigrant people, and standing up against authoritarian overreach. These are the first dominoes the federal administration is trying to topple before attacking the rights of others.

We were also successful in making sure key questions were asked during the interview process. Including these three questions on these major issues.

🦋Will you uphold the Oregon Sanctuary Promise Act to protect immigrants in our county?

🏳️‍⚧️Will you update/create policies that uphold the rights of transgender and immigrant people?

🛡️Will you protect public officials who are following state law and county policy from arrest and imprisonment?
